For my side, I had the option of a baked potato, French fries, or homemade potato chips. During my last visit in June, the potato chips had a burnt flavor, so I opted for a loaded baked potato with sour cream and butter instead. What I received was the smallest baked potato I have ever been served in a restaurant with a steak. It was wrapped in foil, clearly microwaved, and the hard spots were indicative of that. I really should have taken a photo, but at the start of a meal, I don't typically think about documenting it. After placing my order, I waited a while, then caught my waitress’s attention to see if I could get my side salad before the rest of my meal. The kitchen didn’t seem busy—most patrons were just at the bar. When my salad arrived, she mentioned they had just made it. I also ordered an Old Fashioned cocktail with Woodford Reserve, but the orange garnish looked old, and there were just a few ragged pieces of maraschino cherry at the bottom. During my last visit, I enjoyed an amazing Reuben sandwich, and I had high hopes for a wonderful dinner tonight. Unfortunately, it fell short of expectations, and I don't think I will be returning. The Black Sheep is an essential stop when you're in Alpena. The ambiance really captures the essence of an English pub, and Kris along with her staff are both friendly and professional. There's a great variety of beers, many of which are available on tap. My top pick from the menu is the homemade Scotch egg, a delightful taste of the UK right in downtown Alpena, but everything I tried was delicious.
