Whilst a Malaysian restaurant inside an RSL seemed strange, the food here is really a highlight. The Kam Heong and Singapore Chilli Crabs, as well as the favourites like Char Kway Teow and Hainan Chicken Rice. The menu here is wider than the Ipoh Town branches in the city, with a lot more seafood options as well. For dessert, the chendol here is my favourite in Sydney. Malaysians are generally very opinionated when it comes to restaurants, but this is the first where there has been something to please all my friends. Uncle Jimmy Chong (the owner) has really impressed!
Re-reviewed July 2017 We have had a few takeaways since the last review. Deliveroo provide a delivery service, but the price on their system is at least 10% higher than the restaurant price. Ipoh Club are very consistent, and the curry laksas, CKT and nasi lemak are just average, as in my last review. Curry laksa not as rich and thick as Papparich but still tasty. Stir fried dishes (CKT, Mee Goreng) average. Not much wok eh (breath of wok). Curry chicken and beef rendang and nasi lemak pleasant but average.
Not a bad place for quick Malaysian meal. The food is not the best but it is authentic and the menu covers most of the classics such as chicken rice, nasi lemak, roti, mee goreng etc. As far as ambience goes, it is not a place to take your partner on a date.
Ipoh Club is located inside the Chatswood RSL. Lots of space for large groups and the staff were friendly. We ordered several dishes to share family-style: Ipoh bean sprouts, hainanese poached chicken, sambal barramundi, cereal prawns and kapitan chicken. They were by no means the best versions I've had in Sydney, but they were good enough. However, the kapitan chicken didn't actually taste like kapitan chicken so I'd avoid.
