There can be quite lengthy queues as they don't take bookings. Food is generous. Love the guy in the kilt! Er...that's not a dish! Well come to think of it, he probably is. I prefer a dedicated table for 2 / 4 usually as I hate listening to other people's conversations on a shared table. Also watch out for tiny tables with uncomfortable stools near a walkway! You may get bumped around.
We absolutely loved our brunch at Vegie Bar. The menus was pretty extensive and it was so nice to go to a restaurant with so many vegan options. Each dish was creative and tasty, and the Laksa was really delicious. We also ordered the Gnocchi which was a stand out dish, and the Cauliflower Tagine which was perhaps a tad on the dry side but still good. All in all we loved this place and will definitely go back.
We visited vegie bar with a group of sixteen people. The staff said they could not accommodate a group this big. We explained that we didn't mind sitting at smaller tables and being seated separately. Staff still did not want to seat us. Said we were 'a fire hazard' ???? because we were a big group. I suggested that 16 people in one group are no more of a hazard than 16 individuals. The staff continued to be rude and did everything within their scope to spoil our night. So disappointed. Staff were not merely unhelpful but actually nasty. Spare tables all sides of us yet they seated us as far from each other as possible. Such vitriol does not enhance your ethos
There are quite a few vegetarian restaurants in the neighborhood of Fitzroy and this one seems to be the most well known and popular, even my vegetarian local acquaintance especially recommended it. I ordered some dim sum from the take-out area once and ate at the sit-down (share-table) once. However, I think their food is only all right. On the menu, they serve both Asian and Western style items. I ordered an "tofu and quinoa burger" with sweet potato chips(fries) and chipotle aioli. I could not even really taste either tofu or quinoa and it is also relatively bland. sweet potato chips do taste better but do not go that well with their chipotle sauce. And with AU$17, it is actually a quite pricy hamburger (vegetarian or not). From other reviews, it seems that they do serve some great Southeast Asian items. However, I have to wait until my next visit to Melbourne to judge that.
