Chubby's Diner - Kailua-Kona

It all depends on what you're looking for. Chubby's isn't the easiest place to find, and you'll need to have a desire for some straightforward local food. For starters, it's located inside a bowling alley, and there's no sign outside indicating the restaurant's presence—you really have to know it's there. Given the setting, don’t expect an intimate dining experience; the sounds of arcade games and the clatter of bowling pins can make it hard to hold a romantic conversation. That said, it's an excellent spot for families and anyone with a hearty appetite. We ordered a mixed plate of Teriyaki chicken and Kona pig, which turned out to be quite generous. It came with two bowls of rice, a large bowl of Tuna Mac, and an extra plate for sharing—all for just $12. The breakfast menu also looked appealing, and I can't wait to give it a try. Our server informed us that this location is part of Big Island Grill, which I’ve heard is also quite good. Overall, this place is definitely worth seeking out if you’re looking to eat like a local rather than at typical tourist restaurants.

The best bowling alley ever! Chubby's, a sibling of Big Island Grill, provides an even more affordable option than its older counterpart. While many of the standard items like burgers and pizza start off frozen rather than fresh, the specialties are made to order. Chubby's Kalbi (Korean short ribs) are the best in the city, and they also serve a delicious oxtail stew along with a Kalua Pig cabbage that keeps us coming back for more.

Chubbys is so unexpected – in a good way. Our hotel staff recommended it to us and we were skeptical pulling into the Chubby parking lot, but yes, it is in a bowling alley / arcade! There are some stands for you to sit or you can bowl and at the same time eat. We have the oxtail soup (must get), oxtail loco moco, and the pig and cabbage. All delicious, but the oxtail soup.... Was extraordinary amazing. The broth is an explosion of taste and the oxtail is perfectly brewed. Very recommended!!!

Food was excellent, shocked to find good local cuisine in an arcade, but delicious. The staff was friendly, would recommend.

The food at this bowling alley is surprisingly good. The fish and chips are delicious, and I really enjoyed the adobo. I'm looking forward to trying the oxtail soup the next time we visit!
